Dr. Dava Washburn Receives Prestigious Carl M. “Cheesie” Nelson Award

Grayson College is proud to announce that Dr. Dava Washburn, Vice President of Instruction, has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 Carl M. "Cheesie" Nelson Award, presented by the Texas Association of Community Colleges (TACC). This distinguished award recognizes exemplary administrative leadership within Texas community colleges and has been awarded annually since 2003.

Named in honor of a revered figure in Texas higher education, the Carl M. "Cheesie" Nelson Award honors Vice Presidents or Deans who demonstrate exceptional leadership, a strong commitment to student success and unwavering dedication to the mission of community colleges and the communities they serve. Dr. Washburn’s selection highlights her integrity, vision and deep investment in the success of students and faculty at Grayson College.

“Dr. Washburn has consistently demonstrated what effective and compassionate leadership looks like,” said Dr. Jeremy McMillen, President of Grayson College. “She brings vision, collaboration and a student-first mindset to everything she does. We are thrilled to see her contributions recognized at the state level.”

Throughout her tenure, Dr. Washburn has led strategic initiatives that have transformed the academic experience at Grayson College. Her efforts include expanding innovative degree pathways such as RN to BSN, launching semiconductor and CDL training programs and supporting the growth of the Police Academy. Her leadership continues to foster innovation in teaching and learning, strengthen community partnerships and drive a culture of continuous progress.

Beyond her work on campus, Dr. Washburn is actively engaged in community service and deeply invested in the well-being of the broader community. Her leadership, grounded in honesty, compassion and fairness, embodies the enduring legacy of Carl M. ‘Cheesie’ Nelson.
