Dual Credit Cosmetology Program

Program Overview

The Grayson College Dual Credit Cosmetology Program prepares students for careers in the beauty and personal care industry through hands-on instruction and state-approved training. Students work toward eligibility for licensure through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) while developing practical skills in hair design, hair coloring, chemical services, facial specialties, and salon operations.

Students may work toward:

  • Cosmetology to Barber pathway
  • Esthetics Certificate
  • Nail Technician Certificate

The program combines classroom instruction with extensive practical experience in a salon-style learning environment designed to prepare students for employment and state licensure examinations.

Credential and Licensure

Students completing the required coursework and practice hours may become eligible to:

  • Test for Texas Cosmetology licensure through TDLR
  • Continue into Cosmetology to Barber certification pathways
  • Pursue additional certifications in Esthetics and Nail Technology

A total of 1,000 hours of cosmetology instruction and practice is required for Texas state licensure.

Instruction & Curriculum

Courses are taught by Grayson College instructors and combine:

  • Classroom instruction
  • Hands-on salon laboratory experiences
  • Hair cutting and styling techniques
  • Hair coloring and chemical services
  • Facial specialist training
  • State licensing exam preparation
  • Client service and professional salon practices

Schedule

Cosmetology classes are held:

  • Monday through Thursday
  • Fall and Spring semesters
  • 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Due to state hour requirements and laboratory training, students should plan for consistent attendance throughout the program.

Class Location

All Cosmetology courses are taught face-to-face on the Grayson College main campus in Denison.

No prerequisites required.

Vaccination Requirement

Texas state law requires students under the age of 22 attending classes on a Grayson College campus to provide documentation of a meningococcal vaccination within the previous five years or submit a conscientious objection waiver prior to enrollment.

  • Milady Standard Cosmetology textbook with CIMA access code: approximately $483 (subject to change)

Required Supplies

  • Cosmetology kit: approximately $695 (subject to change)
  • Official uniform scrubs: approximately $145 per set
  • Additional personal supplies may be required throughout the program

Financial Aid

Full or partial tuition waivers may be available for dual credit students who qualify for free or reduced lunch programs.
