Description
Patient care technicians are on the front lines of health care, providing patients with comfortable living conditions, assisting them with daily activities, collecting patient vitals and working with supervisory staff members to ensure quality patient care. While not required. It is strongly encouraged that students take Nurse Aide, Phlebotomy, and EKG prior to taking this course. Students must enroll concurrently in both NUPC 1020 (96 classroom hours) and NUPC 1060 (64 clinical hours) to complete the program and to be eligible for the certification examination. Note: Healthcare program requirements must be met prior to enrollment.
Included in your tuition are 1 set of burgandy scrubs, textbook, study guide, practice tests and 1 attempt at the licensure exams which is scheduled by the instructor and is non-refundable and non-transferable. This course may be eligible for additional funding sources. Successful program completion earns a THECB recognized Occupational Skills Award. Students must pay for SurScan background & drug screening prior to enrollment" ($139)

Drug Screens & Background Checks:
Students must pass a urine drug screen and an additional criminal background prior to enrolling in the course.
Documentation of the following immunizations, titers or tests must be uploaded to your SureScan account prior to registration in the course. Please note that some of these immunizations take up to six months to complete. Immunizations must be started in time to complete the series before the program's start date.

- Varicella (Chicken Pox), Proof of either:
- two documented doses of varicella immunization
- or a titer test (blood test) confirming immunity
- Hepatitis B series, Proof of either:
- a complete three-injection series of Hepatitis B vaccinations,
- a complete two-injection series of Heplislav
- a titer test confirming immunity (positive reading)
- MMR series, Proof of either:
- a complete two-injection series of MMR vaccinations, or
- a titer test confirming immunity (positive reading)
- Tetanus/Diptheria/Pertussis (TDAP) (within past 10 years)
- DTAP or TD not acceptable
- Meningococcal Vaccine proof of either:
- one dose of the vaccine within 5 years and at least 10 days prior to the first day of class, or
- ID verifying the applicant is over the age of 22
- Influenza Vaccine (the most recent variation)
- TB Exam: Obtain proof of a negative TB (tuberculosis) test. Blood or skin test must be within one year, negative chest x-rays must be within five years.
- COVID Vaccine
- Grayson College does not require this vaccine, however, clinical agencies do. Medical and religious waivers are considered, and requirements are subject to change at any time. We understand that it is your choice to receive the COVID vaccine; if you choose not to attend your clinical education placement due to a vaccine requirement, we will try to accommodate your request. However, we cannot guarantee you an alternate placement, which may impact your program completion.
Additional Requirements:
- CPR: Obtain or hold American Heart Association or American Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider level CPR certification.
- Please note that any programs which include this certification (CNA, PCT, CCMA, etc...) DO NOT REQUIRE that you be certified before class.
- All CPR classes must include a skills performance check-off and must be current (within two years)

- Performance Requirements: In order to accomplish program outcomes, students must:
- Have visual acuity with/without corrective lenses to identify cyanosis, absence of respiratory movement in patients, and to read small print.
- Have hearing ability with/without auditory aids to understand the normal speaking voice without viewing the speaker's face and to hear monitor alarms, emergency signals, call bells, and stethoscopic sounds.
- Have the physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation, lift patients, and move or maneuver in limited spaces.
- Have the ability to communicate effectively in verbal and written form, to speak succinctly and clearly, and explain simple patient care tasks.
- Have manual dexterity to perform assigned skills.
- Have the ability to function safely under stressful conditions, adapting to ever-changing clinical situations involving patient care.
- Be able to meet the performance, physical, and/or lift requirements of the assigned clinical agencies.
