R.D. Spiehs joins the Grayson County Vikings as head coach Dusty Hart's top assistant for the 2010 campaign. Spiehs' duties will include working with the pitchers, catchers and recruiting efforts. The Grand Island, Nebraska native comes to Grayson after a one year stint as the undergraduate assistant at the University of Nebraska. Prior to joining the coaching ranks, Spiehs was apart of the 1998 Nebraska legion state championship team before playing for the University of Nebraska from 1999-2001. During that stretch, the Huskers were three-time Big XII tournament champions and were 2001 College World Series participants. The former pitcher was selected as a co-captain for the 2001 team and contributed on the 2000 pitching staff which had the lowest ERA in the country (3.14).After college Spiehs embarked on a seven year professional playing career. Originally drafted by the San Francisco Giants, he also pitched for the San Diego Padres and Seattle Mariners organizations. R.D. Spiehs appeared in over 325 games and pitched with the Giants (Fresno) and the Padres (Portland), AAA affiliates. In total, the right hander played under 17 managers and pitching coaches with Major League experience. Coach Spiehs graduated with his degree in Communications from Nebraska in 2009. He is engaged to former professional and first team All-American soccer player, Jenny Benson; who also graduated from the University of Nebraska. The two are to be wed November 21, 2009.
