A Tech-Prep education program is a combined secondary and postsecondary program, beginning in high school and continuing through two years of postsecondary education, which: (a) leads to an associate degree with advanced technical skills or a two year certificate; (b) provides technicalk preparation in at least one field of engineering technology, applied science, mechanical, industrial or practical trade, or agriculture, heatlh, or business; (c) builds student competence in mathematics, science, and communications (including applied academics) through a sequential course of study; (d) is developed utilizing input from secondary schools, postsecondary institutions, business and industry; and (e) leads to placement and employment. Tech Prep links high school and community college programs to provide a focused, non-duplicative curriculum.

Tech-Prep's coordinated sequence of academic and technical courses begin in the ninth grade. After completion of high school Tech-Prep education, several options are available:

A job
Advanced education at a community college that leads to an associate of applied science degree;
Additional advanced education at a four year college or university leading to a bachelors degree.
