HOW TO APPLY FOR CAN!

PARTICIPATION

I. How To Apply:

Students are eligible to apply for entry into the CAN! Program at the end of their sophomore year. All applicants must complete:

  1. CAN! Interest Form
  2. CAN! Application
  3. Work Keys Testing

The CAN! Interest Form and Application may be obtained through their high school counselor's office. Work Keys testing will be arranged by a CAN! staff member upon notification by the school counselor.

Along with the application, the following criteria will be considered:

  1. Grade Point Average
  2. Class Attendance
  3. Written recommendation from a teacher or counselor at their school
  4. Business & Industry interview results

Students who are considered for employment are subject to drug testing and criminal background checks as required by prospective employers. Students will also be required to sign a program training agreement.

II. Participation Criteria:

School:

The student's workplace mentor will review the student's report card after each quarter. If a student has trouble maintaining school work once in the program, the workplace mentor, student, and designated school representative will meet to evaluate the student's involvement in the program. The student's workplace mentor will work with the student's direct supervisor to reduce the student's work hours for a set period of time. During the time period, progress will be monitored. At the end of the specified time period, the school representative will verify whether the student's grades have been raised. The student and the student's workplace mentor will be notified of the status of the student's grades. Any student unable to maintain his/her grades can be dismissed from the program.

If a student is dismissed from the CAN! program, the school representative along with a CAN! staff member will work with the Human Resource staff of the employer to fill the vacancy as timely as possible.

The school representative will be in regular contact with all the workplace mentors while the students are enrolled at the high school.

Work:

The student's workplace mentor will review the student's initial training plan with the student upon employment. This training plan will indicate expectations and goals for the participating student. An evaluation will be completed at the end of each grading period. This evaluation will be forwarded to the appropriate school representative to be placed in the student's file. If at anytime the student fails to show progress or the inability to meet the employer's expectations the workplace mentor, student, and designated school representative will meet to evaluate the student's involvement in the program. The student's workplace mentor will work with the student's direct supervisor to determine an appropriate course of action. During a pre-determined time period, progress will be closely monitored. At the end of the specified time period, the workplace mentor and/or supervisor will evaluate student's success and continuation in the program.

If a student is dismissed from the CAN! program, the school representative along with a CAN! staff member will work with the Human Resource staff of the employer to fill the vacancy as timely as possible.

The school representative will be in regular contact with all the workplace mentors while the students are enrolled at the high school

III. Student Alternates for the Program:

There will not be a list of student alternates. Those students that do not receive a job offer during the spring enrollment may have another opportunity to interview for a position as openings occur. These students will be notified by the designated school representative upon availability of a program opening.
