Spring 2009 Performance Schedule

GCC Music is proud to announce the performance lineup for this semester.  The concerts are as follows:

Tuesday, April 21, 7:00 PM: Voice Recital, Room SC113

This is a recital of the voice students of Professor Amye Derix.  Singers, most accompanied by piano, will present a variety of songs in a unique evening which represents a culmination of the students’ hard work this semester.

Thursday, April 23, 7:00 PM: Jazz Piano Recital, The Boiler Room (coffee shop in Sherman)

Professor James Dering’s jazz piano students will present an evening of jazz at this wonderful, casual venue in Sherman.  Students demonstrate skills and pieces learned throughout the semester, and each will perform with a bass player and drummer, in a “jazz trio” format.  Mr. Dering will also perform.

Friday, April 24, 7:00 PM: Guitar and Bass Recital/GCC Guitar Ensemble, Irma Blackburn Lecture Center, Nursing Bldg.

Professor David Tercero’s thriving studio of students put on a performance of individual and various ensemble combinations, including classical and more contemporary styles.  Dr. Tercero (an accomplished classical guitarist) will also perform.  This evening also features a performance by the GCC Guitar Ensemble, one of the newest groups in the GCC Music Program.

Monday, April 27, 7:00 PM: GCC Jazz Combo 1, The Boiler Room

The talented GCC Jazz Combo 1 presents an exciting evening of standards and modern pieces and arrangements, in a variety of styles, including swing, latin jazz, bebop, modern jazz, and funk.  Instruments include keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, sax, trombone, and two vocalists.  Directed by Mr. James Dering

.

Tuesday, April 28, 7:00 PM: Chamber Band Concert, Room SC113

The Spring 2009 semester has seen the creation of three new ensembles, including this one.  This small group, directed by Professor Jim Whitfill, uses an intimate instrumental configuration to perform challenging works, mostly which hover around the spirit of concert band literature.

Wednesday, April 29, 7:00 PM: Sarah Crawford, Piano Recital, Room SC113

Being awarded the Dan O’Dea Memorial Scholarship in Music is one of the highest honors in the GCC Music Program.  The recipient for the past two years has been pianist Sarah Crawford.  This evening Sarah, student of Professor Tatiana Bays, presents her own recital of advanced works from classical piano literature.

Thursday, April 30, 7:00 PM: Brass, Woodwind, and Drumset Recital, Irma Blackburn Lecture Center, Nursing Bldg.

Mr. Jim Whitfill joined us last semester to teach private lessons in drumset, brass, and woodwind instruments.  These lessons allow students to continue playing their instruments even if they do not have time to participate in an ensemble.  Professor Whitfill’s thriving studio of students put on a performance filled with variety and excellence.

Friday, May 1, 7:00 PM: Classical Piano Recital, Room SC113

Ms. Tatiana Bays, GCC piano instructor, presents an exciting performance by her students, who will play a variety of pieces showcasing their hard work this semester.  Ms. Bays will also perform.

Saturday, May 2, 7:00 PM: GCC Jazz Combo 2, The Boiler Room

The growing popularity of playing jazz music at GCC necessitated forming a second jazz combo this semester.  This talented group, like GCC Jazz Combo 1, will present their own evening of jazz standards and modern pieces and arrangements, in a variety of styles, including swing, latin jazz, bebop, modern jazz, and funk.  Instruments include keyboard, guitar, bass, drums, sax, trumpet, and two vocalists.  Directed by Mr.

 James Dering.

Monday, May 4, 7:00 PM: GCC Singers Choir Concert, Room SC113

GCC Music has a rich tradition of choirs.  The GCC Singers will present an evening of vocal music showcasing their hard work this semester.  Their concert will include a variety of pieces, from works of classical choral literature to contemporary pieces.

All concerts are free and open to the public.  Come out and support your fellow students!
