Degree Plan

Grayson College offers an Associate of Science degree in Music.  This degree serves as a good musical foundation for students, and as a preparation for transfer into a typical four-year institution as a music major.  The plan below is taken from the 2007-2008 catalog, and represents a typical layout for two years.  Though it is not required to take all classes in the exact order below, certain courses do have corequisite and prerequisite requirements.  All music majors should meet each semester with their advisor, James Dering, in order to insure they are taking the optimum courseload appropriate to each situation.  All information is subject to change.

IMPORTANT: There are a few errors in the printed version of the plan, and a revised degree plan is in development.  Please see the important notes below the plan for explanations of certain aspects of the plan.  Also, if you would like a more thorough listing of music classes offered at GCC, click here.

Important Notes

1.  The plan above was set up for someone who considers voice to be their primary instrument.  Therefore, it requires a total of 8 credits of voice lessons.  The revised version of the plan (due in Fall ’08) will allow for any instrument to be considered a “primary instrument.”

2.  Likewise, the plan above was constructed at a time when choir was the only ensemble available.  We presently have a jazz combo also, and beginning Fall ’08, we will offer choir, band, strings ensemble, and jazz combo.  Any of these will count as an ensemble.  “Advanced Choir” refers to a sophomore-level classification for the course, and still entails the same physical class, meeting at the same time, etc.

3.  GCC Music is in agreement with most schools, that the piano is an essential instrument for learning and working within music, regardless of one’s “primary instrument.”  It is used as a tool in Music Theory and Eartraining courses, and is essential in many work environments (the high school choir teacher, for example, who has to occasionally play parts on the piano).  Therefore, all students will be required to take piano as a “secondary instrument.”  (These are the MUAP 1169, 1269, 2169, and 2269 courses listed above).  You are given the option as to whether you want 30 minute or one-hour lessons, however.  You may not “spread” one two credit-hour course over two semesters.  That is, you must take three semesters of piano, whether they are one or two credits each.

4.  There is indiscrepancy regarding how the naming system for private lessons works.  This will be fixed in the new version of the plan.  For now, you should know that, for the plan above, the primary lessons should be two credits each semester for four semesters, and the piano lessons should be one or two credits each, for three semesters.

5.  The plan published in the 2007-2008 Catalog puts Music Literature in the second semester of the first year.  This is an error, because the course is only offered in the fall.  In the above plan, Music Literature has been swapped with a mathematics core class, putting Music Literature in the first semester of the freshman year.  The revised plan will correct this problem.
