Students are encouraged to select electives that meet the graduation requirement of the senior institution.SPCH 1311. Fundamentals of Speech. (3-0-3). Open to all students. Mechanics of speech, use of body, and training of the beginning speaker. Methods of preparation, outlining, and delivery in relation to practice of various types of speech experiences. (R)
SPCH 1315. Public Speaking. (3-0-3). Distinctive characteristics of various types of speeches. More advanced than SPCH 1311, designed to improve ability to compose and deliver speeches for various occasions through a better understanding of theories of communication. Prerequisite: SPCH 1144 or 1321 or consent of division dean. (R)
SPCH 1318. Interpersonal Communication. (3-0-3). Introduces fundamental concepts and provides skills development for verbal and nonverbal communication in one-to-one situations. Explores supportive and defensive climates, skills for sending and receiving messages, the reduction of communication barriers, conflict resolution, and leadership. (R)
SPCH 1321. Business Speech. (3-0-3). Basic principles of communications. Methods of preparation, outlining, and delivery of material for public presentations. Practice in public speaking related to the business world. (R)
SPCH 2333. Discussion and Small Group Communication. (3-0-3). Introduces discussion and small group theories/techniques, emphasizing leadership and participation in routine professional meetings, business conferences, and community groups. Includes units on problem-solving agendas, interpersonal communication, and small-group presentational styles. (R)
SPCH 2341. Oral Interpretation. (3-0-3). Introduction to oral interpretation of literature, preparation and reading of poetry and prose, story telling, choral speaking, practice in phrasing, vocal quality, time, force, and pitch. (R)
