Student Services and Activities




Counseling Services

Professionally trained counselors are available to all students and are prepared to assist with career planning, vocational interest tests, college information, college orientation, course selection, information regarding course transfer, degree planning, early registration for courses and personal counseling. DISCOVER, career guidance utilizing state-of-the-art computer-assisted programs, is available. Counselors do not make decisions for students nor do they "solve" students' problems. Rather the counseling experience prepares students to handle their situations in mature and a responsible manner.

Grayson County College provides a Veterans Affairs Office to assist the enrollment of veterans, war orphans, war widows, and totally disabled veterans, their wives and children. This office serves as a liaison between Grayson County College and the Vetera ns Administration and is located in the Student Center. Advisement for all college programs is available in Counseling Services. Please contact the Veterans Affairs Counselor for information concerning the required documents.

All students are strongly encouraged to visit the Counseling Services Office as part of their college experience. The Counseling Services staff includes several professional counselors and a secretary.

ESL Support

Grayson offers ESOL classes in conversation, reading, and writing/grammar for students who speak English as their second language. Designed to help students improve their English for greater success in home, school, and work environments, ESOL courses can be taken prior to or concurrent with other college coursework. Students are placed at the beginning, intermediate, or advanced level based on their language skills.

Along with specialized ESOL classes and labs, the College offers support services to non-native English speaking students to improve their access to and success in academic and vocational coursework. Specially trained staff assist ESL students with applyi ng to college, establishing residency and registering for classes. ESOL Staff also acts as their mentor each semester they are enrolled - helping them attain their personal and educational goals. Such assistance includes referring them to campus and community services as needed (tutoring, financial aid, child care, JTPA, etc.)

Learning Assistance Center

The Learning Assistance Center offers a variety of services beneficial to students of all backgrounds.

The Reading/Writing/Math Center provides supplemental instruction and practice for students in developmental math classes and college algebra. The lab furnishes students with computer or video lessons as support for the work they are doing in class. Students can also access materials to help them master the objectives required on the TASP. Math courses offered by the department include Basic Math Lab - a combination lecture/lab course - and Math Lab I or II - individualized learning programs.

Students enrolled in developmental and freshman level reading or writing lecture courses access the Center to complete assignments per their instructor to fulfill the lab component of their course. In addition, Center staff maintains the self-paced learn ing programs for developmental students who take a lab class in lieu of a lecture course. Under staff's guidance, the Center's instructional materials and equipment is available to all students taking courses at the college.

Center staff conduct seminars and consultations on study skills and coping strategies. Supplementary course materials and learning aids are kept on reserve for individual and group study.

Grayson County College offers individual and small group tutoring services at no cost to its students. Peer tutors, qualified students referred by faculty members, are available through the Tutoring Center to assist students on a drop-in and appointment basis. In addition, the Tutoring Center provides special support services and adaptive equipment for students with special needs. Mrs. Neva Yeary is the Tutor Coordinator.

Testing services are also provided through the Center.

Learning Resource Center

Job Placement Service

The Student Employment Service, located upstairs in the Student Center, is available to assist students in off-campus job placement. The Student Employment Service works directly with students and community employers to locate jobs and identify students q ualified to fill them. Job openings are posted on bulletin boards in the Student Center, and are also on the downstairs bulletin board in the Liberal Arts Building. In addition to listing career opportunities, the Student Employment Service assists studen ts in developing resumés, preparing for interviews, and developing successful search strategies.

Campus Police

The campus police office is located in T-104 in the Technical Building and is staffed by state certified police officers who have authority and jurisdiction on both the East and West Campuses. Students and employees who operate motor vehicles on campus ar e required to register their vehicle with the Campus Police Department and place a valid decal on that vehicle.

Student Activities

The objective of the Office of Student Activities is to offer a variety of quality extra-curricular entertaining and educational experiences that act as diversions from the inevitable stresses associated with the college environment. Specific recreational activities are planned to encourage the development of healthy lifestyles outside the classroom, laboratory and office. The programs offered by and services available through Student Activities are open to all students, staff and faculty. The Office of S tudent Activities is located on the east end of the second floor of the Student Center.

Student Government Association

The Grayson County College Student Government Association is the student organization that acts as an advisory group to the administration of the college and serves to stimulate and direct various extra-curricular activities of the college. The Student Go vernment Association serves to unify clubs and organizations and their activities. It is composed of elected officers from the sophomore and freshman classes and representative from each active club/organization. The Student Government Association sponsor s various activities and helps arrange the social calendar for the year. The Coordinator of Student Activities is the sponsor.

Band

The Grayson County College Band plays many scheduled performances each year. Membership in the organization is open to all students of the college. Competitive auditions are held by the director of the band. Members of the band must comply with all rules of the college in class attendance, scholarship requirements, and general conduct.

Choir

The Grayson County College Choir is open by auditions to all students of the college. In addition to regular campus performances, the choir appears in concerts before many civic organizations each year.

Athletics

Student Rights and Responsibilities

Students who conduct themselves with proper consideration for the rights and works of their associates and who have serious purposes in attending college will have no difficulty in adjusting themselves to student life at Grayson County College.
Regulations of the College forbid the use or possession of alcoholic liquors or narcotics, or the appearance of the student on the campus under the influence of either.
Any student indicted by a grand jury under a felony charge shall be suspended from the institution until the case is tried. If a student is convicted, he/she shall be expelled and his/her enrollment terminated at Grayson County College.

Student Organizations

Cheerleaders

The Grayson County College Cheerleaders is an organization that promotes college spirit through a group endeavor to bring about a feeling of school pride and loyalty. The composition of the squad will be determined by the number of talented people trying out each year.

Delta Psi Omega

Delta Psi Omega is a national fraternity for students involved in dramatic arts and promotes fellowship among students interested in theater on both local and national levels. Membership is open to all GCC students with interest in the Fine Arts.

Dental Assistants Student Association

The Dental Assistants Student Association is an organization to further the knowledge of the dental assistant, to inform and interest the student in local dental organizations and in the American Dental Assistants Association. The organization is limited to those students enrolled in the Dental Assistant Program.

Electronics Club

The Electronics Club is open to all students in the Electronic Engineering Program. The organization promotes electronics education and involvement with local engineering industries.

Grayson Nursing Students' Association

This association is the local organization with affiliation in the Texas and National Student Nurses' Associations. Its purpose is to provide the basic background needed for participation and leadership in the professional association. Membership is limit ed to students enrolled in the Associate Degree Nursing Program.

International Students Organization

The International Students Organization pursues a policy of caring and cooperation among international students. The club works toward the interchange of ideas, points of view, and explores cultural and social differences in an effort to promote better un derstanding. The club's aim is to help international students feel more comfortable in the American society. Membership is open to all GCCstudents.

Lambda Alpha Epsilon

Lamba Alpha Epsilon's purpose is to encourage the establishment and expansion of higher education and professional training in criminal justice and to provide a unified voice for professionals and students in the criminal justice system. Membership is ope n to any student with interest in the criminal justice area.

Medical Lab Technician Association

The MLT Association mission is to enhance the quest for knowledge through participation in professional society activities and to promote an interest in and gain knowledge of regulatory agencies associated with the medical technicians field. Membership is limited to students enrolled in the Medical Laboratory Technology Program.

Phi Theta Kappa

Phi Theta Kappa is the only national honor fraternity for American community/junior colleges. Offering opportunities for leadership and service, the fraternity also promotes the exchange of ideas, personal enrichment through fellowship with other scholars , and the encouragement of scholarships for advanced education. Eligibility requirements include current enrollment, good moral character and citizenship, and a 3.5 GPA for at least 12 hours of work leading to a recognized degree program.

Turfgrass Society

The Turfgrass Society's purpose is to gain a better understanding of the turfgrass industry by sharing experiences, knowledge, and fellowship. The Society intends to provide for and enhance the recognition of students enrolled in the Turfgrass and Horticu lture programs at Grayson County College.

Vocational Nursing Students' Association

The Vocational Nursing Students' Association seeks to help further knowledge in the field of vocational nursing. This club participates in many campus activities and programs. Membership in this organization is limited to vocational nursing majors.
