Library holdings include approximately 60,000 volumes, 100 periodical subscriptions, and 550 videocassettes.
The Library provides 15 public-access Internet computers for students and the public. Microsoft Office is also available for use on these computers. Through EBSCOhost, G.C.C. has access to Masterfile Fulltext 1000(an online periodical index and abstracting service with 1000 full-text journals), and to C.I.N.A.H.L. (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature). Staff members who need an email address should complete an email address registration form at the Library. If you wish to incorporate Internet into your assignments or to schedule the 15 computers for your class, please speak with a librarian.
The library is a member of Texshare, a Texas resource-sharing consortium. Through Texshare, students and faculty at G.C.C. have access to many databases. Faculty and students may register at the first-floor desk for a TexShare card which allows borrowing from any of the participating TexShare libraries.
In addition, the Grayson County College Library is a member of BARR, the Bibliographic Association of the Red River, a four-library consortium whose members include Grayson County College, Denison Public Library, Sherman Public Library, and Austin College. Grayson County College and the two public libraries share the same online public access catalog. BARR cardholders have specified lending privileges at each of these libraries. The BARR card must be presented in order to check out materials. A courier service delivers books between these libraries Monday-Friday.
Faculty with a G.C.C. BARRcard may borrow books for four weeks, renewing the material once if necessary. To enable all users to have access to audiovisual materials, these are checked out for three days only. Periodicals are to be used only in the Library while overdue fines are not charged to faculty and staff, they are urged to keep books no longer than necessary. It is expected that faculty and staff will pay for any nonreturned materials in the same way that other borrowers reimburse the Library
Any staff member may request that a G.C.C. item currently checked out be held for him/her upon its return.
Faculty placing materials on reserve at the first floor desk will be asked the course name and number, and length of time the reserve is needed. Please bring your reserve items to the Library before you announce their availability to your students so that the items may be processed and ready. Examples of items placed on reserve include sample exams, study guides, periodical articles, personal copies of books, class notes, and textbooks not available when necessary at the beginning of the semester.
Most reserve items are checked out for one hour. Extended reserve is also available. Presentation of a BARRcard is required by students who wish to use reserve materials.
In order for students to be prepared for future courses and to gain a minimal level of bibliographic literacy, Library Orientation is accomplished through an English 1301 lab assignment. Every student in English 1301 will participate in a bibliographic instruction lab session which will cover BARRCat, electronic search indexes including EBSCOHost, evaluating sources, and basic library circulation policies. Students must complete a written lab assignment which requires hands-on experience with library resources.
In addition to this general library instruction session, course-related sessions are available. Students generally respond better to library assignments if they know where to start, which indexes to use, where important subject reference tools are, or what professional journals in the subject are available at the Library. Examples of subject-specific sessions that have been taught are history, office occupations, criminal justice.
If you plan to assign a research paper, please check with the librarians to make sure adequate materials are available for the specific assignment. with advance notice, materials can be placed on reserve so that all students will have access to them if everyone is working on the same subject.
Please contact a librarian if your students will be working on a research paper or project with will require knowledge of specialized subject tools. A librarian will work with you to schedule a special course-related session.
