Step Seven: Read Jane Austen or Learn Visual Basic
Toward the back of the first floor is the circulating collection. These books comprise the 0-900's of the Dewey Decimal system. For a quick review,
- 000's: Generalities (bibliography, Library and information sciences, General encyclopedic works, General serials and their indexes, General organizations, News media, General collections, Manuscripts and rare books)
- 100's: Philosophy and Psychology ( Metaphysics, Epistemology, Paranormal phenomena, Specific philosophical schools, Psychology, Logic, Ethics, Ancient, Medieval, Oriental philosophy, Modern Western philosophy)
- 200's: Religion (Natural theology, Bible, Christian theology, Christian moral and devotional theology, Christian orders and local church, Christian social theology, Christian church history, Christian denominations , Other and comparative religions)
- 300's: Social Sciences (General statistics, Political science, Economics, Law, Public administration, Social services, Education, Commerce, Communications, Transport, Customs, Etiquette, Folklore)
- 400's: Language (Linguistics, English and Old English, Germanic languages, Romance languages, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Latin, Hellenic languages, Other languages)
- 500's: Natural Sciences & Mathematics (Mathematics, Astronomy and allied sciences, Physics, Chemistry and allied sciences, Earth sciences, Paleontology, Paleozoology, Life Sciences, Botanical sciences, and Zoological sciences)
- 600's: Technology and Applied Sciences (Medical sciences, Medicine, Engineering & allied operations, Agriculture, Home economics & family living, Management & auxiliary services, Chemical engineering, Manufacturing, Manufacture for specific uses, Buildings)
- 700's: The Arts (Civic and landscape art, Architecture, Plastic arts, Sculpture, Drawing & decorative arts, Painting & paintings, Graphic arts, Printmaking and prints, Photography and photographs, Music, Recreational & performing arts )
- 800's: Literature and Rhetoric (American, English, Germanic, Romance, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, Latin, Greek, Other Languages)
- 900's: Geography and History (Geography and travel, Biography, History of ancient world, General history of Europe, Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Other areas)
These books all check out for two weeks. You will notice that there are some recent encyclopedia volumes here that you can check out. Also, the 800's include many books that you would find in the Fiction section of a public library. If you are looking for something to read for fun, check here.
For more serious reading, browse through the law books located on the first floor. Legal Assistant students use these books as do people from the community who would like to write their own will, or file their own divorce papers without the assistance of an attorney.
