for Internet-based
Algebra Courses

Please note: This course does not use WebCT and the program will
not run on a Macintosh. Please read the WELCOME LETTER first.

The internet version of algebra is not advisable for all students. Successful students in this course must be self-disciplined and able to learn algebra independently.

Purchase the book for the internet version of your algebra course from the GCC bookstore. It is a paperback book and is published by Academic Systems. Do not remove the shrink-wrap, unless you are absolutely sure the internet course is right for you.

Connect to the internet and go to the following website: www2.academic.com/IM.html

From the drop-down menu, choose Grayson County College.

Choose student.

Choose getting started.

Choose system requirements.

Choose system requirements for academic.com at the bottom of this page. Read the pdf file to verify that your computer is capable of running the Academic Systems program.

Close this window; choose installing Academic Online.

Carefully follow the instructions on this webpage. If you do not install the client installer CD correctly, the program will not run correctly. It is imperative that you disable your antivirus program while the program is installing.

After you have successfully installed the program, you should be ready to begin the course.

To begin the course:

Connect to the internet through your usual method.

Double-click on the Academic Online logo on your desktop or go to www2.academic.com/IM.html . Choose Grayson County College from the drop-down menu. Click on “student.” Click “Do a Lesson.”

A blue page reading "Welcome to Academic Online" will now come up. This has a login section on it. In most cases, your log-on name will be your last name with the first four digits of your social security number; your password will be the last five digits of your social security number. A student named James Smith with SSN 433-01-9782, would have a logon name “smith4330” and password “19782”. If you are unable to log on, contact your instructor.

Type in your log-on name, then hit TAB. (If you hit enter, it will give you a message saying that it does not recognize you. Just say ok and go back and put in your password). Enter your password. Now, hit enter, or click OK.

You are now on the Overview page. Insert your Algebra Part 1 CD in the CD-ROM drive. Click on "Do a Lesson". This will take you to the Table of Contents for your course. Click on the first uncompleted topic in the list of lessons, this should result in a highlight bar. Now click the right arrow, located in the lower right-hand corner of the page.

Click on the first uncompleted section of the topic you selected on the previous page, this should result in a highlight bar. Now click the right arrow, located in the lower right-hand corner of the page.

You are now on the title page for the topic you selected. Click the right arrow, located in the lower right-hand corner of the page. This right arrow is used to turn the page throughout the lessons.

Once in a lesson: Skip the overview. You are not required to take the Pretest. Click on the Explain button. Do all of the concepts in Explain. You have finished a concept when you reach a score page. You don't have to print this page, unless you want a record.

Click on the Apply button. Do all of the concepts in Apply.

Click on the Homework button. Your homework is found in your Personal Academic Notebook. Do your homework.

Click the Overview button. Take the pretest in the overview section as a review for the Evaluate quiz. If the computer asks you if you want to use that quiz as your Evaluate grade and you like your grade, say yes! Otherwise, click the Evaluate button and take the quiz. You have three attempts on the Evaluate quiz. The highest grade of the three attempts will be recorded.

Repeat steps 1 through 11 for each lesson in the course.

To log off:

Click on file at the top of the page, then select quit.

Click on file at the top of the new page, then select log off.

Now you may safely close your browser.
