Assistant Database Administrator
The primary role of the Assistant Database Administrator is to design and deliver some of the more complex infrastructure solutions leveraging SQL technologies and to back up or support the Senior Database Administrator. The Assistant Database Administrator will assist in developing, maintaining, installing, using, and operating complex database systems. Support the Senior Database Administrator and assume full DBA responsibilities when necessary. Responsible for assisting in the operation of the Administrative ERP systems for Grayson College (POISE). Assist in the research, deployment, integration, and support of software, hardware, middleware and database solutions such as JICS Portal, Third-party querying tools, CONNX, MySQL or SQL databases, and web applications and interfaces. Performs problem analysis and troubleshooting of the enterprise database infrastructure. Assists in the support of all administrative data systems with a primary focus on Admissions, Financial Aid, Registration, Human Resources, online web interfaces, and various reporting processes. Performs application development, programming, and documentation of database management systems (DMS) applications using Open VMS Basic, DMS batch procedures and other programming languages. Supports all ERP (POISE) and related administrative software. Assists end users with POISE, OpenVMS, and database development on the administrative servers.
The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field. An equivalent combination of education, training, and relevant experience (particularly knowledge of SQL databases) may substitute for the degree requirement on a one-for-one basis. The Assistant Database Administrator must possess good organizational skills for project planning and implementation. The Assistant Database Administrator will focus on architecting, developing, and testing various enterprise application solutions as well as serving a support role to the Senior Database Administrator. The successful candidate will work closely with the Senior DBA on internal development projects and must think creatively to design and develop solutions to complex problems. The Assistant DBA must have a proven ability to understand customers’ needs and must possess strong customer service skills.
Experience with server operating systems (Windows Server 2008 R2/2012, Open VMS), web stack and database operations (Apache, MySQL, MSSQL, PHP), storage services and servers (SAN, NAS, SMB, NFS, iSCSI), and .NET Framework. Knowledge of Ethernet switching, routing, LAN/WAN topology and protocols. Experience programming in POISE-PX using DMS and ASQ. Experience supporting JICS and with web programming languages is preferred.
