Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology

Program Description

The Refrigeration and Air Conditioning curriculum at Grayson County College prepares students for opportunities as refrigeration and air conditioning technicians. Instruction is given under actual shop conditions where students develop an understanding of the operation and performance of refrigeration and air conditioning systems and components.

Air conditioning mechanics install, maintain, and repair air conditioning, refrigeration, and heating equipment, and accessories. They install motors, compressors, evaporators, and other parts. They connect duct work, refrigerant lines and piping, and then connect the equipment to a power source.

G.C.C.'s curriculum offers students the option of receiving a certificate of completion or an Associate of Applied Science degree in refrigeration and air conditioning.

Information on textbook requirements, tool requirements, and program costs is available to assist with planning. For further information, contact R. D. (Doug) Lacey, 6101 Grayson Dr., Denison, Texas 75020, (903)-465-6030.

Career and Job Opportunities

The U. S. Department of Labor predicts and employment increase of 20 - 30 % through the mid 1990's. Beginning mechanics may face competition for the highest paying jobs, however, graduates of training programs that emphasize hands-on experience will have the best opportunities.

The Texas Department of Labor and Standards, Boiler Division, requires owners of air conditioning contracting businesses to be licensed by the State of Texas. Employees of a licensed contractor are not required to be licensed by the state.

Approximately 5 % of the students enrolled in the Refrigeration program acquire the Associate degree. The educational goal of the majority of students is to obtain the special trade skills necessary to be employed as a refrigeration/air conditioning technician. Ninety percent of the enrollment in the program do complete their educational goal. Approximately 5 % of the enrollment are non-completers due to job change, illness, poor study habits, etc.

Grayson County College makes no claims regarding the initial or future salaries of its graduates.
